Kintsugi: The Art of turning destruction into beauty

Kintsugi literally translates to golden (“kin”) and repair (“tsugi”), or Golden Repair. This traditional Japanese art uses a precious metal – liquid gold, liquid silver or lacquer dusted with powdered gold – to bring together the pieces of a broken pottery item and at the same time enhance the breaks. Here are the steps to bring back your favorite broken pot!

The steps!

Gather materials: broken pot, gold mica powder (or whatever type of powdered pigment you want to use), popsicle sticks, clear epoxy or strong-hold glue, and gloves. Important!! Make sure the area you work in has adequate ventilation!

  1. Fit the pieces together ahead of time so you know how to put them together before the glue dries

  2. Mix the dust together with the glue, using just enough pigment to make it look opaque in color

  3. Use the popsicle sticks to spread an even but fairly thick layer on the broken edges of the pot

  4. Fit the pieces together, applying enough pressure that the epoxy is forced out from between the cracks and is clearly visible

  5. Allow to dry

  6. Fill your creation with a new plant friend!
